Who Is Dayan Krishnan? Senior Advocate Likely To Head NIA’s Prosecution In Tahawwur Rana

New Delhi: Tahawwur Rana, accused in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, is set to arrive in Delhi on Thursday afternoon via a special chartered flight from the United States. Senior Advocate Dayan Krishnan is likely to head the prosecution team of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in the case against Rana.

Rana, a 64-year-old of Pakistani origin, was extradited from the U.S. after a prolonged legal battle. He will be taken into custody by the NIA upon arrival.

Who is Dayan Krishnan?
Dayan Krishnan is one of India’s leading criminal lawyers and a senior advocate at the Supreme Court. A 1993 graduate from India’s first national law school, Krishnan was part of the institution’s inaugural batch, according to Can Foundation. He established his own legal practice in 1999 and has handled several high-profile cases, including the 2001 Parliament attack case, the Kaveri water dispute, and the 1999 Justice J.S. Verma Commission proceedings.

Krishnan also served as the special public prosecutor in the December 2012 Delhi gang-rape case. He has previously represented the Central Government, NIA, and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), and was the CBI’s lead prosecutor in the alleged DDA scam.

Rana faces serious charges under various sections of Indian law, including criminal conspiracy, waging war against the state, murder, forgery, and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. He is also expected to be transferred to Mumbai, though the city police have not received official confirmation.

The U.S. formally handed over Rana to the NIA on April 8 in California. Additionally, the Central Government has appointed advocate Narender Mann as the Special Public Prosecutor for the trial linked to the 2008 attacks.
