Karnataka: Karnataka politics remained on edge on Thursday as uncertainty grew over Cheif Minister Siddaramaiah’s future. Strong buzz within Congress circles suggested that the veteran leader was considering stepping down, but the situation took an unexpected turn after Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot was reported to be out of Bengaluru due to a personal emergency.
The Governor’s absence has delayed what many believed could have been a crucial political development, adding more suspense to an already tense atmosphere in the state capital.
For the past few days, senior Congress leaders have been holding discussions in Delhi over the party’s leadership in Karnataka. Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar is widely seen as the leading contender if a change in leadership takes place, though the Congress leadership has so far avoided making any official announcement.
Despite public denials from party leaders, speculation around Siddaramaiah’s possible resignation has only intensified. Political activity in Bengaluru and Delhi has kept both party workers and the opposition guessing about the Congress high command’s next move.
Siddaramaiah, who returned as Chief Minister after Congress swept the 2023 Assembly elections, remains one of the party’s most influential leaders in Karnataka. Known for his welfare focused politics and strong support among backward communities, his possible exit marks a major moment for the state’s political landscape.

Interestingly, amid the leadership discussions, Siddaramaiah recently moved ahead with the long-debated caste census report a politically sensitive issue that could shape Karnataka politics in the coming years. Many within political circles see this as one of the most significant decisions of his current tenure.
Meanwhile, supporters of D.K. Shivakumar have already begun celebrating in anticipation, while Congress leaders continue to insist that no final decision has been taken yet.
With no official word from the party and the Governor away from the capital, Karnataka’s leadership question remains unanswered for now, keeping the political suspense alive.
