Teachers Rally Against Job Losses in Kolkata After Supreme Court Ruling

Dozens of teachers and non-teaching staff gathered outside the district inspector of schools’ office in south Kolkata on Wednesday to protest widespread job losses triggered by a recent Supreme Court decision. The ruling struck down the appointments of 25,753 employees in West Bengal’s government-operated and -supported schools, declaring the entire hiring process flawed and irredeemably compromised.

The demonstrators claimed that police intervened forcefully, using batons to break up the crowd. A local police official acknowledged the incident and stated that an investigation into the response was underway.

The Supreme Court’s judgment has sent shockwaves through the education sector in the state, leaving thousands of former appointees in limbo as they challenge the abrupt termination of their livelihoods.
