Prime Minister Narendra Modi was conferred Sweden’s Royal Order of the Polar Star, Commander Grand Cross, on Sunday, marking the highest distinction the Scandinavian nation bestows upon a head of government. This recognition brings Modi’s tally of global honours to 31.
The award was presented during Modi’s two-day official visit to Sweden. Upon arrival at Gothenburg Airport, he was warmly received by Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson. The two leaders subsequently engaged in extensive bilateral discussions covering trade, technology, defence, and other strategic areas of mutual interest.
During the delegation-level talks, both sides conducted a comprehensive review of existing bilateral relations and identified fresh opportunities to deepen cooperation. Particular emphasis was placed on boosting trade ties, which stood at USD 7.75 billion in 2025. The meetings underscored the growing partnership between India and Sweden in key sectors.
This marks Modi’s second visit to Sweden. He had previously travelled there in 2018 to participate in the inaugural India-Nordic Summit, reflecting the long-standing engagement between India and the Nordic region.

The Royal Order of the Polar Star, one of Sweden’s oldest and most esteemed orders, symbolises recognition of exceptional contributions and strong bilateral relations. Its conferment on Modi highlights the deepening strategic and diplomatic bonds between the two democracies.
Observers note that the honour comes at a time when India continues to expand its global footprint through high-level engagements and multilateral cooperation. Modi’s latest accolade further reinforces his stature on the international stage, where he has been frequently recognised by various nations for leadership in diplomacy, sustainable development, and global governance.
The visit is expected to yield concrete outcomes in economic collaboration, innovation partnerships, and defence cooperation, building on the positive momentum in India-Sweden relations. As both countries navigate an evolving global landscape, such high-level exchanges and symbolic honours play a vital role in strengthening people-to-people and institutional ties.
