‘We Meet at a Time of Deep Global Uncertainty’: Jaishankar Opens BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meet Calls for Diplomacy Amid Iran-US War

New Delhi: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Thursday (May 14) opened the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, calling for diplomacy as the gathering convened against the backdrop of the ongoing Iran-US war.
The meeting brought together foreign ministers and senior delegates from BRICS member nations and partner countries to address key global and regional issues, including economic cooperation, multilateral engagement, and international security.

Among those present were Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, and Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono, who joined Jaishankar and other leaders for a family photo at the venue.
A day earlier, Jaishankar had personally welcomed Lavrov at Bharat Mandapam ahead of the meeting, in what marked a significant bilateral diplomatic engagement on the sidelines. He also received representatives from member and observer nations at the national capital venue before the meeting formally got underway.
