IMD Issues Heatwave Alerts in Gujarat: Temperatures Rise to 45°C

Gujarat is experiencing a severe heatwave, with temperatures climbing to alarming levels across the state. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Kutch and orange/yellow alerts for multiple districts, including Rajkot, Morbi, Junagadh, and Gandhinagar, as daytime temperatures are expected to range between 40°C and 45°C until April 10.

On Thursday, Surendranagar recorded the highest temperature at 43°C, while Bhuj and Rajkot followed closely at 42.8°C and 42.7°C, respectively. Ahmedabad saw temperatures hover around 40°C. The IMD attributes this early summer heat to a western disturbance coupled with an anti-cyclonic circulation system. Coastal regions of South Gujarat are also experiencing discomfort due to hot and humid winds.

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has implemented a heat action plan to mitigate risks, including advisories for residents and changes in school schedules. Hospitals in Surat have installed additional cooling systems to manage heat-related illnesses.

IMD officials warn that heatwave conditions are likely to persist in Saurashtra-Kutch and North Gujarat regions until April 9. Residents are advised to avoid outdoor activities during peak hours (12 PM–3 PM), stay hydrated with fluids like water and buttermilk, and wear light cotton clothing.

Experts caution that prolonged exposure to high temperatures can lead to heatstroke, dehydration, and other health complications. Traditional remedies like consuming onion juice or curd may help alleviate symptoms of heat exhaustion.
