New Delhi : Delhi has been placed on high alert following intelligence inputs warning of possible terror attacks using improvised explosive devices (IEDs) at key installations across the national capital. Intelligence agencies warned that terrorists could target important locations in Delhi with IEDs, prompting the Delhi Police to intensify security measures across sensitive and high-footfall areas.
Extensive checking drives were launched at several strategic locations in the city. Security was also tightened outside the Delhi BJP state office and the BJP national headquarters, where police personnel carried out inspections and installed additional barricades. The latest alert came weeks after the Delhi Police Special Cell busted a module linked to Pakistani gangster-terror operative Shahzad Bhatti, who is alleged to be working at the behest of Pakistan’s intelligence agency ISI.
Officials reportedly found that members of the module were planning targetted killings in Delhi. Bomb disposal squads, sniffer dog units and quick reaction teams, along with the Delhi Fire Service, have also been placed on alert. Security measures have additionally been reinforced in settlements and areas considered vulnerable from a law-and-order perspective, while local police are carrying out random checking drives and verification exercises.
Senior officers are closely monitoring the situation and reviewing security arrangements throughout the city. At least 15 people were killed and over 20 injured in an explosion inside a car near the Red Fort on November 10 last year. The incident marked the first terror attack in the national capital since 2011.
