New Delhi : Prime Minister Narendra Modi, citing the higher turnout in the ongoing second phase of polling in West Bengal, said the increased participation indicates that people want to vote out the ruling Trinamool Congress and signals a victory for the BJP in the state. “The second phase of voting is currently underway in Bengal, and reports indicate a strong voter turnout. Just like in the first phase, people are coming out in large numbers to cast their votes. Images of long queues are circulating on social media.
Voting in Bengal is taking place in a fearless atmosphere, unimaginable in the last six or seven decades,” the Prime Minister said, as he addressed a gathering after opening the Ganga Expressway in Uttar Pradesh. He added, “People are casting their votes without fear. This is a virtuous symbol of the country’s Constitution and the strengthening of its democracy,” and expressed his “gratitude to the great people of Bengal for being so vigilant about their rights and voting in large numbers.”
Both the BJP and the Trinamool Congress, locked in a fierce do-or-die battle, are hopeful that the higher voter turnout in the election, which is the first after the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), will work in their favour. I am confident that in the elections in these five states, the BJP is going to complete a historic hat-trick of victories. The results of May 4 will strengthen the resolve for a developed India. They will infuse new energy into the pace of the country’s development, the Prime Minister further said.
With the second phase of voting in West Bengal, the current poll season comes to an end, as voting has already concluded in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam and Puducherry. Results for all four states and the Union Territory will be declared on May 4. Several reports of clash and violence were reported from the state in early hours of voting. Violent clashes erupted on Wednesday morning in West Bengal’s Nadia district in the Hatra Bazaar area amid polling for Phase 2 of Assembly elections.
