Premier League Title Race Blows Wide Open as Haaland Fires Man City Past Arsenal

Manchester City have breathed new life into the Premier League title race after edging Arsenal 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, with goals from Rayan Cherki and Erling Haaland proving the difference in a pulsating encounter.
The result tightens the standings considerably Arsenal sit third on 70 points from 33 games, with City just three points behind having played one game fewer.
Gap Narrows at the Top
It has been a miserable run for Mikel Arteta’s side since their League Cup final defeat to City last month one win in six across all competitions, including four straight domestic losses. A City win over relegation-threatened Burnley on Wednesday would put Guardiola’s men top of the table for the first time this season.
For Arsenal, the ghosts of near-misses past are stirring again. Three runners-up finishes in a row, and now another title challenge threatening to unravel at the worst possible moment.
They will feel the cruelest kind of agony twice striking the post in the second half, moments that could define their entire season.
How It Unfolded
City started with intent, pinning Arsenal back from the off. Cherki’s deflected effort rattled the post early, and a penalty appeal for handball against Gabriel Magalhaes went unheeded.
The opener came through individual brilliance. Cherki picked up the ball deep, danced past Gabriel and Declan Rice, and slotted calmly into the bottom corner a goal of genuine quality against one of the league’s most organised defences.
Arsenal’s reprieve was immediate, if unglamorous. Goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma ironically, the man who tormented Arsenal during PSG’s Champions League semi-final run last season dithered in possession, allowing Kai Havertz to charge down his clearance and divert it into the top corner.
The equaliser disrupted City’s rhythm and it took Guardiola’s half-time intervention to restore their dominance.
Haaland the Difference
The second half was a game of fine margins. Haaland hit the post from a corner before Donnarumma atoned for his error with a crucial one-on-one save from Havertz. Martin Odegaard’s follow-up was then hooked off the line by Matheus Nunes. Moments later, Eberechi Eze struck the inside of the post and watched the ball roll agonisingly along the goal line.
City made Arsenal pay instantly. Haaland outmuscled Gabriel to meet Nico O’Reilly’s cross, hooking past David Raya for his 34th goal of the season 25 minutes from time.
Arsenal continued to threaten. Gabriel’s header deflected off O’Reilly onto the post; Havertz failed to convert the rebound. Gabriel was fortunate to remain on the pitch after an apparent headbutt on Haaland that earned only a yellow card. Havertz then connected cleanly with Leandro Trossard’s cross in stoppage time but could not keep his header on target Arteta sinking to the ground in disbelief on the touchline.
What’s at Stake
Arsenal have five games remaining and, on paper, a more favourable run-in. But with momentum firmly on City’s side and their own confidence visibly fragile, Arteta faces the urgent task of steadying his squad before another title charge slips through their fingers.
