Manipur 5-Day Shutdown After Children Killed In Bishnupur Bomb Attack, Protests Turn Violent

Imphal: Manipur has plunged into a five-day total shutdown following the tragic deaths of two young children in a bomb explosion earlier this month. Civil society organisations, along with Meira Paibis (women torchbearers) and a people’s collective, called the bandh starting Sunday, April 19, 2026, which is scheduled to continue until April 23, 2026. Organisers have warned of stepping up their agitation if the government fails to meet their demands by the deadline.

The incident that triggered the widespread anger took place on April 7, 2026, in Bishnupur district, a valley area of the state. A five-year-old boy and a five-month-old infant girl lost their lives in the blast. Protesters are now demanding the immediate arrest of those responsible and swift justice for the victims. They have also called for strong action against alleged Kuki militants reportedly operating in the hill districts.

On the first day of the shutdown, normal life came to a complete halt across the valley districts. Markets, schools, government offices, and public transport remained largely shut, with only essential services operating in limited areas. Thousands of people participated in street protests and night rallies in Imphal East and Imphal West districts on Sunday evening.

In some locations, demonstrations turned violent. Clashes between protesters and security forces were reported, particularly in Kakching district, where police used tear gas shells to disperse the crowds. Women also organised a Meira rally in Imphal East to press their demands.

Manipur Police issued a statement highlighting concerns over anti-social elements infiltrating the rallies. According to the police, some participants have resorted to throwing petrol bombs, using catapults with iron projectiles, and pelting stones at security personnel. Many protesters were allegedly under the influence of liquor or other intoxicants, with instigators supplying weapons and bombs ahead of the gatherings. The police noted that security forces exercised maximum restraint while dispersing the crowds to avoid collateral damage and appealed to citizens to maintain peace and avoid violence. Legal action has been warned against those involved in unlawful activities.
