Indonesia Earthquake 7.4 Magnitude Triggers Tsunami Waves Near Ternate Island

Jakarta: An earthquake of magnitude 7.4 struck the Northern Molucca Sea off Indonesia’s Ternate Island on Thursday, videos of extensive damage have surfaced online on social media.
The earthquake damaged buildings and also activated tsunami waves. During the course, one person lost his life.
In one of the disturbing videos that surfaced online showed how at a departmental store employees had to flee the shop after the violent shakes rocked Indonesia.
While the other video showed the massive damage occurred due to intensive tremors setting several things to fall and break as the earthquake intensified.

The United States Geological Survey reported aftershocks of magnitude as high as 5 and Indonesia’s meteorology agency BMKG reported Tsunami in West Halmahera at 0.3M high and Bitung at 0.2m high.
A local in the area shared her experience to Reuters about how the people panicked and rushed out of their homes following the earthquake while there was no visible damage in the neighbourhood. She said items fell off shelves and electricity supply was disrupted.
Indonesia is prone to intense seismic activity due to the interaction of multiple tectonic plates, resulting in frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
Local Authorities urged citizens to prepare for possible evacuations when necessary, Reuters reported.
According to U.S Tsunami warning authorities, hazardous waves could probably impact coastal areas of Indonesia , Philippines and Malaysia within a radius of 1,000 km from the epicenter which was located about 580 km south of the Philippine coast and nearly 1,000 km from Sabah in Malaysia.
