Rahul Gandhi Warns Of LPG Shortage, Says ‘Big Problem Is Coming’ Govt To Prepare For Crisis

New Delhi: Rahul Gandhi on Thursday raised the alarm over a possible LPG shortage, tying it to the conflict in West Asia and telling reporters the government needs to start preparing now — while it still can.
The Leader of Opposition said he tried to raise the issue in Parliament but wasn’t allowed to make a statement. He told ANI the rules have quietly changed: “Normally, the procedure is that you can ask to talk. So I asked to be allowed to make a statement about the LPG gas and oil situation in the country. But a new procedure has started where the Minister will first decide, then I will speak, then the Minister will reply.”
Congress MP K C Venugopal had urged Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla earlier in the day to let Gandhi raise the matter on the floor. Birla said it could be taken up once the Petroleum Minister is present. “I received the notice and informed the minister. When the minister is present in the House, we will discuss it,” he said. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju took the same line.
Outside Parliament, Gandhi was more direct. He said the problem goes beyond West Asia it’s a question of whether India’s energy security is actually being managed.
“All fuel is going to be a problem because essentially our energy security has been compromised. Flawed foreign policy has created this problem. Now we have to prepare. We still have a bit of time left. The government and the Prime Minister should instantly start the preparations; otherwise crores of people will suffer great losses,” he said.
He added: “It is a much bigger issue than whether Iran will allow fuel or not. This war is fundamentally about the current world order. We’re entering an unstable time.” Gandhi also said PM Modi is “trapped” and unable to function as a full prime minister but that whatever the internal constraints, protecting people from an energy crisis remains his responsibility.

“I can see a big problem coming,” Gandhi said, stressing the warning wasn’t political. “The problem is that the Prime Minister is not able to function as the Prime Minister of the country.”
On the supply side, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas said Wednesday that domestic LPG production has gone up by nearly 25 percent, with the full output directed toward household consumers.
