Supreme Court Confirms Firing of 25,000 Teachers in Bengal Jobs Scam

In a major blow to the West Bengal government, the Supreme Court on Thursday upheld the Calcutta High Court’s ruling to sack over 25,000 teachers and non-teaching staff hired by the West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC) in 2016. The decision stems from a cash-for-jobs scandal that tainted the recruitment process.

Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna, alongside Justice PV Sanjay Kumar, condemned the selection process, calling the appointments fraudulent. “These hires were secured through deceit, which is tantamount to cheating,” the bench stated. They found no grounds to overturn the High Court’s order, which mandated the termination of these staff members and the repayment of their salaries.
