BMC Battles Mumbai’s High-Rise Inferno Surge With Advanced Foam Tech And Drones

Mumbai : In response to a notable increase in fire outbreaks in Mumbai’s tall buildings, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is preparing to implement innovative firefighting measures to bolster the city’s readiness in a rapidly growing vertical environment.

The municipal authority intends to introduce Compressed Air Foam Systems (CAFS), which promise quicker and more resource-efficient fire control. This technology uses pressurized foam that can access higher levels more adeptly than traditional water techniques, while minimizing water usage and secondary harm. It is especially effective for skyscrapers, where quick intervention and restricted entry pose significant challenges.

The initiative for an advanced firefighting simulator, encompassing design, procurement, setup, evaluation, and activation, is in progress and slated for completion by April 2026. As outlined in the BMC’s 2026–27 budget, Rs. 230.90 crore has been earmarked for these efforts.

Furthermore, drones will be utilized to aid in combating fires in elevated structures, offering live monitoring, incident evaluation, and precise actions on upper levels to improve accuracy and protect responders.

The BMC is also acquiring five specialized vehicles for high-rise operations, such as Turntable Ladders measuring 32 meters and 40 meters, to facilitate rescues and suppression in lofty edifices. In addition, four multifunctional first-responder units equipped with 24-meter hydraulic platforms and integrated pumps for tall buildings are due for deployment shortly, per the 2026–27 budget. Bids have been solicited for 11 state-of-the-art First Response Fire Engines that can project water up to 250 meters high, and four auxiliary vehicles featuring high-pressure pumps and illumination for emergency locations are being obtained.

According to the BMC, the new fire station on LBS Road in Kanjurmarg (West) is almost ready, with another planned near the Mumbai Coastal Road (South) to speed up responses. Work on further stations at Juhu Tara Road in Santacruz (West), Mahul Road in Chembur, and Tilak Nagar will begin soon.
