LCA Tejas Crash : Hindustan Aeronautics Limited Debunked The Media Reports, Calls It Minor Tech Incident

New Delhi : A day after reports suggested a crash of the Light Combat Aircraft Tejas, state-run aerospace major Hindustan Aeronautics Limited moved swiftly to deny any such incident. In a post on X, HAL said, “HAL acknowledges the recent media reports on the LCA Tejas incident and wishes to provide factual clarification. There has been no reported crash of the LCA Tejas. The event in question was a minor technical incident on ground.

The clarification comes against the backdrop of heightened scrutiny within the Air Force after the loss of a third Tejas aircraft earlier this month, prompting enhanced technical checks across the existing fleet, according to sources. The IAF lost another Tejas fighter in an operational area at a key air base while the aircraft was landing after a routine training sortie. A preliminary assessment has pointed to a suspected technical glitch, possibly involving onboard systems failure.

This marks the third Tejas aircraft lost since induction. The first crash took place near Jaisalmer in March 2024 when a fighter returning from a firepower demonstration went down, with the pilot ejecting safely. The IAF is set to carry out a critical evaluation of the Tejas Mk1A in April, after which a final decision on induction will be taken, Air Force sources told India Today. HAL’s Chairman and Managing Director recently told India Today that five Tejas Mk1A aircraft are ready and that discussions are under way with the IAF for their acceptance.

The Tejas Mk1A programme is running nearly two years behind schedule. HAL has attributed the delay largely to engine supply constraints. The IAF, which has placed orders for 180 Mk1A fighters, is awaiting induction at a time when fighter squadron strength remains under pressure. As questions swirl over safety and timelines, HAL’s firm denial of any fresh crash seeks to calm immediate concerns.
