CBSE Introduces Digital Evaluation System For Class 12 Board Exams 2026, Class 10 To Continue with Traditional Method

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced the implementation of On-Screen Marking (OSM) for assessing Class 12 answer sheets beginning with the 2026 board examinations, aiming to accelerate the evaluation process and boost transparency. Meanwhile, Class 10 answer sheets will continue to be assessed through the conventional physical method this year. The new digital framework involves scanning answer sheets and evaluating them on computer displays rather than distributing physical copies to examiners. The examinations are scheduled to commence on February 17.

CBSE organizes Class 10 and Class 12 board examinations throughout India and in 26 nations every year, serving approximately 46 lakh students, making the assessment process extraordinarily large-scale and labor-intensive.

Dr Sanyam Bhardwaj, Controller of Examinations, CBSE, revealed the development, stating the Board is implementing On-Screen Marking as part of its ongoing initiatives to boost efficiency and strengthen transparency in answer sheet assessment.

According to the official communication dated February 9, this initiative will substantially optimize the evaluation process while decreasing reliance on manual procedures.

Key Drivers Behind CBSE’s Transition to On-Screen Marking

Multiple factors have prompted the CBSE’s significant transition, including accelerated evaluation through broader participation of educators from affiliated schools and total elimination of addition mistakes, as scores will now be computed automatically. Additionally, it will minimize manual involvement and margin for errors, while also decreasing workforce needs for verification-related tasks, thereby accelerating final result compilation.

The transition will further help conserve transportation time and expenses, as physical answer sheets will not require movement. Educators can now stay at their respective schools and maintain regular responsibilities while conducting evaluations.

It will also facilitate the participation of teachers from CBSE-affiliated schools worldwide, unrestricted by geographical boundaries. The new framework is also eco-conscious, as it will decrease paper consumption and transportation, making the operation more sustainable.

Technical Requirements in Schools for Digital Assessment

CBSE has instructed schools to guarantee technical preparedness to ensure seamless execution of On-Screen Marking, and directed them to maintain a computer lab with a Public Static IP, according to affiliation bye-laws.

The board has also informed schools that they must have PCs or laptops with Windows OS 8 or above, at least 4 GB RAM, and 1 GB free space on the C drive. The systems should also have updated internet browsers such as Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Internet Explorer, and Adobe Reader must be installed on them. Furthermore, they should have dependable internet connectivity with a minimum speed of 2 Mbps and an uninterrupted power supply.

CBSE’s Support Framework for Schools and Teachers

CBSE has also detailed multiple support mechanisms to assist schools and teachers in adjusting to the new system. It will conduct dry runs and training sessions and set up a call centre to resolve technical issues. It will also release instructional videos to explain how the system works.

CBSE will also share detailed guidelines separately to ensure that schools complete preparations on time. It will also allow all teachers with OASIS IDs to log in and familiarise themselves with the OSM platform.
