India’s First Musical Road ‘Jai Ho’ Greets Drivers In Mumbai’s Coastal Route
Mumbai has launched what is being touted as India’s first musical road on the Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj Coastal Road, a 500-metre stretch designed to play a melody as vehicles pass over it at a specific speed.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) inaugurated the road in the presence of Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. Positioned between Nariman Point and Worli just after the Coastal Road tunnel, the new feature uses precisely engineered rumble strips grooves cut into the asphalt that produce vibrations when tyres roll over them at roughly 60–80 km/h. These vibrations convert into sound waves that recreate the tune “Jai Ho”, the Oscar-winning song composed by A.R. Rahman for Slumdog Millionaire.

Signboards have been installed at 500 metres, 100 metres and 60 metres ahead of the musical section, including inside the tunnel, to alert drivers so they can adjust their speed and enjoy the effect safely. Officials note that the melody is distinct enough to be heard inside vehicles even with windows closed, provided the recommended speed is maintained.
The concept of musical or “melody” roads originated in Japan in 2007 and has since been used in select countries such as Hungary, South Korea and the United Arab Emirates. Mumbai’s installation is the first in India and only the fifth known example worldwide, illustrating how road infrastructure can blend engineering, culture and commuter experience.

Authorities say the idea behind India’s first musical road extends beyond novelty, aiming to add an element of engagement to daily driving while potentially encouraging motorists to maintain safer speeds. The BMC and state government are watching the pilot closely to evaluate whether similar stretches could be introduced elsewhere.
