70 Killed And 169 Injured In Explosion At Mosque In Islamabad; Emergency Declared

Islamabad : An explosion struck a Shi’ite Muslim mosque in Pakistan’s capital Islamabad on Friday, leaving 70 dead and 169 injured. The blast occurred at the Tarlai Imambargah in the Shehzad Town area of the federal capital. Police and rescue teams rushed to the spot and began relief operations immediately after the incident.

The Express Tribune, citing a spokesperson from the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), reported that an emergency had been declared at the hospital. The injured are being shifted to PIMS and the Polyclinic for treatment, the report added. This is the second such blast incident which was reported from the capital city within six months. Last November, at least 12 were killed and over 25 injured as a car explosion rocked the Islamabad court complex.

The blast went off around 12.30 pm during peak business hours near the entrance of the Islamabad district court, triggering panic among lawyers and others present at the court premises. The impact of the explosion was so powerful that it was heard up to six kilometres away. PIMS and CDA Hospital to ensure immediate medical care for the victims. A PIMS spokesperson confirmed that the emergency was imposed on the directions of the hospital’s executive director.

The main emergency unit, orthopaedics department, burn centre and neurology ward have all been activated,” the spokesperson said, adding that doctors and paramedical staff had been placed on high alert. The attack has once again raised concerns over security in the federal capital. The suicide bombing comes during a two-day state visit by Uzbekistan President Shavkat Mirziyoyev and just days after Pakistani security personnel were involved in deadly clashes with the Balochistan Liberation Army, resulting in heavy casualties on both sides.

Last year’s explosion occurred in a parked vehicle near the district court’s entrance during peak business hours, creating panic among lawyers and others present at the facility. The blast’s impact was felt up to six kilometres away, underlining its severity. At that time, Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif blamed Afghanistan for the attack, declaring that the country was in a “state of war.”
