India To Begin Evacuation Of Citizens Stuck In Iran From Tomorrow
New Delhi : The Government of India is preparing contingency plans to evacuate stranded Indian nationals from Iran amid escalating concerns over safety due to the ongoing unrest in the country. Embassy officials are moving on the ground to identify students and collect details because internet connectivity is not available and telecommunication is unreliable.
Concerns over the safety of Indian students have grown amid widespread protests across Iran. Rights groups claim that at least 3,428 people have been killed in a crackdown on nationwide protests, with conditions deteriorating sharply in recent days. According to official estimates, more than 10,000 Indians, including students, are currently residing in Iran.
They are requested to contact the Indian Embassy for any assistance in this regard,” the advisory read. It is reiterated that all Indian citizens and PIOS should exercise due caution, avoid areas of protests or demonstrations, stay in contact with the Indian Embassy in Iran and monitor local media for any developments,” it further added. According to estimates, over 10,000 Indians, including students, are currently living in Iran. On Wednesday, India had advised all its nationals in Iran to leave by available means and avoid travel to the country.
Iran protests that erupted in December 2025, initially against worsening economy, have now turned political, escalating into a nationwide uprising that has also triggered international tensions. Amid global attention on possible military intervention by the President Donald Trump-led US administration, Tehran was also reportedly taking preparatory measures to retaliate. Protests against falling economy spread across Iran since December 28, and quickly turned political with protesters demanding an end to clerical rule, led by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Authorities accuse the US and Israel of fueling the unrest.
