Mumbai BMC Elections 2026: 18 Minor Incidents Reported During Campaigning, 28,000 Police Personnel Deployed for Peaceful Polling

Mumbai: The campaign period for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections commenced on January 3 and formally ended on January 13 at 5 pm. During this phase, at least 18 minor incidents were recorded across different parts of the city. A senior IPS officer confirmed that all 18 cases were filed under non-serious sections, with none involving major offences.

The most recent incident took place in Park Site, Vikhroli, where former corporator Haroon Khan (Ward 124) stands accused of assaulting two people who were canvassing for UBT faction candidate Sakina Shaikh. The assault allegedly occurred after a verbal dispute. Police have filed a case under applicable sections and launched an investigation.

SECURITY STRENGTHENED IN SENSITIVE ZONES

In response to all reported incidents, Mumbai Police have reinforced security measures, particularly in areas designated as sensitive. Additional police personnel have been positioned to ensure the electoral process remains peaceful and undisrupted.

STRINGENT INSTRUCTIONS ISSUED TO ELECTION-DUTY OFFICERS

Mumbai Police have also issued stringent directives to officers and personnel assigned to election duty. Mobile phones must be switched off during duty hours, clear guidelines have been established for media personnel regarding proximity limits for filming or photographing at polling stations and police teams have been strategically positioned across all critical locations.

28,000 POLICE PERSONNEL DEPLOYED FOR ELECTION SECURITY

To uphold law and order before and on polling day, Mumbai Police have deployed approximately 28,000 officers and constables throughout the city.

The strengthened security arrangement is designed to prevent any untoward incidents and ensure the civic elections are carried out smoothly and peacefully.
