PM Modi Warns Against Antibiotic Misuse In Mann Ki Baat: ‘Serious Threat’ As Medicines Lose Effectiveness Against Pneumonia, UTI

New Delhi: Highlighting the growing concern over antibiotic resistance, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday cautioned citizens against consuming such medications without medical consultation.
During his monthly ‘Mann Ki Baat’ radio broadcast, the Prime Minister referenced a recent Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) report revealing that antibiotics are becoming ineffective against numerous diseases, including pneumonia and urinary tract infections (UTI). “This is a matter of great concern for all of us,” Modi stated.
The Prime Minister explained that according to the report, a primary factor driving this crisis is the indiscriminate consumption of antibiotics by the public. He emphasized that antibiotics are not medications that should be taken casually and must only be used under proper medical supervision.
“Nowadays, people have started believing that just taking a pill would cure all their problems. This is the reason diseases and infections are proving to be too strong for these antibiotics,” Modi observed.
He appealed to citizens to avoid self-medication practices, particularly regarding antibiotics. “I urge all of you to refrain from using medicines at your own discretion. This is especially important when it comes to antibiotics. I would simply say: Medicines require guidance, and antibiotics require doctors. This practice will prove to be very helpful in improving your health,” the Prime Minister concluded.
