Police Inspect Justice Yashwant Varma’s Residence Amid Cash Discovery; SC to Hear FIR Petition

A police team visited the residence of Delhi High Court judge Yashwant Varma, where a fire broke out on March 14. During the inspection, police analyzed CCTV footage and spoke with the judge’s family and staff. The fire, which has drawn attention due to the discovery of cash, is suspected to have been caused by a short circuit. The police are working to determine the exact cause and have preserved the site for further investigation.

The Supreme Court, in response to a petition, has agreed to hear the request for an FIR against Justice Varma concerning the alleged discovery of burnt cash. The petition argues that the cash found at Varma’s residence should prompt a formal investigation, akin to those conducted on businessmen under similar circumstances. The Chief Justice of India, Sanjiv Khanna, confirmed that the case would be listed for hearing, and emphasized that no public statements should be made regarding the matter.

This case follows an in-house inquiry initiated by the Supreme Court into the allegations against Justice Varma. The controversy centers on a purported video showing the discovery of burnt money at his residence, and the Court has since taken steps to make public related communications and documents. The legal and investigative processes surrounding the incident are ongoing.
