Delhi’s Toxic Air Sparks Protest at India Gate; Residents Demand Urgent Action, Several Detained

As Delhi’s air quality plunged to near hazardous levels on Sunday, hundreds of citizens gathered at India Gate demanding immediate government intervention to tackle the worsening pollution crisis. The protesters, including parents, environmental activists, and children, voiced their anger over the city’s choking smog and the authorities’ inaction.

According to PTI, a large number of mothers joined the demonstration, carrying placards calling for “clean air now.” They said they wanted to meet elected representatives, including the Chief Minister, but their requests had been denied.

“We have been seeking an appointment to discuss the health crisis, but no one is listening. Every third child in Delhi has damaged lungs and will have a shorter lifespan by at least a decade compared to those breathing cleaner air,” environmentalist Bhavreen Khandari told PTI.

Parallel Protest and Police Detentions

At the same venue, a separate protest was held opposing the Supreme Court’s recent ruling that allows relocation of stray dogs from school and institutional areas. Both groups assembled near India Gate, creating a heavy police presence.

Authorities said several protesters were detained for violating norms as the site is not approved for demonstrations. “There was no permission to hold a protest at India Gate. Some individuals were detained to maintain law and order and prevent disruption in security arrangements,” a police officer said.

DCP (New Delhi) Devesh Kumar Mahla clarified that the detentions were preventive in nature. He reminded that only Jantar Mantar is designated as a legal protest site and that prior permission is required for any public gathering.

Growing Public Frustration

Delhi’s toxic smog, driven by vehicular emissions, stubble burning, and weather conditions, has again ignited public outrage. Many residents say they are forced to keep their children indoors as air quality remains in the “severe” category, with AQI levels crossing 450 in several parts of the capital.

Environmental groups have accused both central and state authorities of neglecting long-term solutions, arguing that seasonal measures like school closures and vehicular restrictions are insufficient.

With pollution worsening every winter, Sunday’s protest underscored increasing citizen impatience and the demand for accountability from those in power.
