Why Canada Is Deporting More Indians Than Ever Before

The number of Indian nationals being forcibly removed from Canada has sharply increased this year, setting a new record and continuing a consistent rise seen since 2019. Data from the Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) shows that Indian deportations in 2025 are on track to surpass all previous years a growing concern for the large Indian diaspora.
Record High Deportations
As of July 28, a total of 1,891 Indians had been deported from Canada, closing in on last year’s figure of 1,997. This marks a threefold jump from 2019, when only 625 Indians were removed, according to earlier reports by the Hindustan Times. Indians now represent the second-largest group facing deportation from Canada, after Mexicans, with 2,678 removals recorded this year. Colombians ranked third with 981 deportations in 2024.
Why the Surge in Forced Removals?
Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney recently acknowledged that his government is intensifying efforts to deport foreign nationals involved in criminal or immigration violations. Responding to a media question in Toronto, Carney said his government plans to make deportations “faster and more efficient” by improving resources and tracking systems.

Officials say the crackdown is part of broader immigration reforms, particularly targeting asylum seekers and those holding temporary resident permits. The move also comes amid a spike in anti-immigration sentiment across Canada.
Police Collaboration With Border Agencies
In a recent development, Peel Regional Police announced on October 10 that it is working closely with the Canada Border Services Agency and the Peel Crown Attorney’s Office to determine whether deportation could be pursued in criminal cases involving foreign nationals.
This announcement followed the arrest of eight Indian-origin men accused in a major mail theft case worth over CAD 400,000. The accused Sumanpreet Singh, Gurdeep Chattha, Jashandeep Jattana, Harman Singh, Jasanpreet Singh, Manroop Singh, Rajbir Singh, and Upinderjit Singh collectively face 344 charges.
India Tops Deportation Inventory
Indians currently lead the list of those awaiting deportation, with 6,837 cases pending, followed by 5,170 Mexicans and 1,734 U.S. citizens. Of the total 30,733 deportation cases in process, 27,103 involve refugee claimants a category where Indians also form the largest group of asylum seekers.
