New Delhi : Tension gripped Assam’s Baksa district on Wednesday as violent protests broke out outside the District Jail following the arrival of five accused who have been arrested in the death case of legendary singer Zubeen Garg. The accused — event organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, the singer’s manager Siddharth Sharma, cousin and suspended APS officer Sandipan Garg, and two PSOs, including Nandeswar Bora — were sent to judicial custody by the Chief Judicial Magistrate earlier in the day.
Large crowd demanding justice for Zubeen Garg gathered and began pelting stones at the convoy. Several vehicles, including a police van, were reportedly damaged in the attack. To calm the situation and disperse the crowd, police resorted to firing in the air and using tear gas shells to control the mob, which had turned violent. Following the unrest, authorities have tightened security around the jail and nearby areas to prevent further escalation.
An Assamese heartthrob, Zubeen Garg, who rose to national fame with his superhit song Ya Ali, died during a sea outing in Singapore on September 19. The 52-year-old artist was scheduled to perform at the North East Festival the next day. According to sources, while 52-year-old Garg was on a sea outing, he fell unwell, and was rushed to a nearby hospital. Doctors placed him under intensive care, but he did not survive.
What initially appeared like an accidental death during an adventure sport, soon turned into an alleged murder case after the singer’s wife Garima and several fans claimed there was foul play. Soon after, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s government formed a Special Investigation team (SIT) which launched a probe and has arrested five people so far in connection with the case.
