VHP Stirs Controversy with Advisory for ‘Hindu-Only’ Garba Events in Maharashtra

An advisory from the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) regarding Navratri celebrations has sparked a political debate in Maharashtra. The Hindu organization has called for garba events to be restricted to Hindus only, suggesting that organizers check Aadhaar cards at entrances to enforce the rule.
The VHP’s guidelines also recommend applying a ’tilak’ on attendees and ensuring they perform puja before entering the venue. The group stated that members of the VHP and its affiliate, the Bajrang Dal, would monitor events across the state to ensure compliance.
In a statement to news agency PTI, VHP national spokesperson Shriraj Nair asserted that “Garba is a form of worship, not entertainment,” and that participation should be limited to those who have faith in the ritual and the goddess.
The advisory drew sharp reactions from political leaders. Maharashtra minister and BJP leader Chandrashekhar Bawankule said that organizers have the right to set entry conditions for their events if they have obtained the necessary police permissions. Meanwhile, Maharashtra Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar accused the VHP of wanting to “set society on fire” for political gain.
The controversy emerges as the state prepares for Navratri, a major Hindu festival celebrated from September 22 to October 1, which traditionally features communal garba dances.
