Delhi Police Car Crushes Tea Stall Vendor, Driver Of PCR Van Accidentally Pressed Accelerator And Mounted Roadside Ramp : Cops

New Delhi : A tea stall vendor was killed after being run over by a Delhi Police vehicle in the city’s Gole Market area on Thursday morning, officials said. The victim was identified as Ganga Ram Tiwari, a physically challenged man in his 50s who had been running a tea stall under a tree near the Ram Krishna Ashram Metro Station for the past decade. Witnesses said he was asleep at his stall when the police control room (PCR) van mounted a roadside ramp and crushed him.

Police said the driver of PCR van accidentally pressed the accelerator and mounted the roadside ramp, causing the vehicle to ram into the man. Tiwari was killed on the spot. His body was sent to a nearby hospital for post-mortem.

Pandit Babu Tiwari, an eyewitness, alleged the police personnel appeared intoxicated when the accident occurred. Locals claimed liquor bottles were found inside the PCR van and nearby police room.

Both police personnel involved in the incident — an assistant sub-inspector and a constable — were suspended and will undergo medical examination. A case is being registered in the matter, police said. An unfortunate accident took place here. The police are taking action as per the law.
