Satish Golcha Named New Delhi Police Commissioner

The Ministry of Home Affairs announced on Thursday that senior IPS officer Satish Golcha has been appointed as the new Commissioner of Police, Delhi. A 1992 batch AGMUT cadre officer, Golcha is currently serving as Director General (Prisons), Delhi.

An official home ministry order dated August 21 stated, “With the approval of the Competent Authority, Sh. Satish Golcha, IPS (AGMUT:1992), presently posted as Director General (Prisons), Delhi, is hereby appointed to the post of the Commissioner of Police, Delhi with effect from the date of assumption of charge and until further orders.”

Golcha succeeds SBK Singh, Director General of Home Guards, who had been serving as acting Delhi Police Commissioner since August 1. This leadership change follows the recent attack on Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta during a weekly public hearing at her official residence in Civil Lines.

The attacker, Rajeshbhai Khimjibhai Sakriya, a 41-year-old auto driver from Rajkot, Gujarat, posed as a complainant before he was restrained by the Chief Minister’s security and others present. An FIR for attempted murder has been registered against him.

Who is Satish Golcha?

Golcha has held several key roles within Delhi Police, including Deputy Commissioner of Police, Joint Commissioner, and Special Commissioner. He came into the spotlight for his handling of law and order as Special Commissioner during the 2020 northeast Delhi riots.

Before returning to Delhi, he served as Director General of Police (DGP) in Arunachal Pradesh from February 2022 to June 2023. In May 2024, Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena appointed him as the chief of Tihar Jail on the recommendation of the police establishment board.
