Mumbai Faces Intensified Rainfall and Strong Winds This Week, IMD Warns

Mumbai is preparing for a surge in rainfall as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts heavy showers, thunderstorms, and gusty winds through July 24, 2025. The city is already grappling with waterlogged roads and traffic disruptions due to persistent downpours, with conditions expected to worsen over the next 48 hours.

The IMD has issued warnings for thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and strong winds, which could further complicate travel across the city. Key routes have been inundated, with the Andheri Subway temporarily closed earlier this week for safety reasons due to severe flooding. A weather enthusiast on X reported at 6:15 AM on July 21, 2025, that South Mumbai experienced heavy overnight rain, with the western and central suburbs likely to face intense showers in the morning. Commuters are advised to carry umbrellas and plan for delays.

On July 21, Mumbai’s skies are expected to remain partly cloudy with moderate rain or thunderstorms possible. The ongoing monsoon has significantly boosted water levels in the city’s reservoirs, with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) reporting on July 19, 2025, that the seven lakes supplying drinking water to Mumbai are at 81.86% capacity, holding 11,84,796 million liters. Despite this benefit, the heavy rainfall continues to disrupt daily life, causing widespread traffic congestion and waterlogging in low-lying areas.

Residents are urged to stay cautious and monitor updates from the IMD and BMC as the city braces for more challenging weather in the coming days.
