India’s Parliament Braces for Heated Monsoon Session Post-Operation Sindoor

NEW DELHI: The upcoming monsoon session of Parliament, commencing on July 21, 2025, is poised for intense debates as the opposition INDIA bloc gears up to challenge the Modi-led government on several critical issues. According to sources, the opposition is set to press for discussions on the Pahalgam terror attack, Operation Sindoor, and US President Donald Trump’s claims of mediating a ceasefire between India and Pakistan.
At a pre-session all-party meeting chaired by Union Minister J.P. Nadda, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju signaled the government’s willingness to engage on matters of national importance, including Operation Sindoor, within parliamentary guidelines. However, no commitment was made regarding a debate on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter rolls in Bihar, a contentious issue raised by the opposition, who allege it risks disenfranchising marginalized communities.
The opposition, unified under the INDIA bloc, has demanded that Prime Minister Narendra Modi personally address the House on Operation Sindoor and Trump’s ceasefire assertions. Congress leaders, including Gaurav Gogoi and Pramod Tiwari, emphasized the need for clarity on these issues, as well as the Pahalgam attack, which claimed 26 lives on April 22. The government is likely to delegate responses to respective ministers, with sources indicating that Modi is unlikely to speak directly on these topics.

The government plans to highlight its achievements during Operation Sindoor, with NDA allies, including JDU, pushing for a debate to showcase the operation’s success. JDU’s Sanjay Kumar told reporters that surveys found no irregularities in the Bihar SIR, countering opposition claims. The session’s legislative agenda includes 17 bills, such as the Income Tax Bill, 2025, and measures addressing sports governance, mining regulations, and the extension of President’s Rule in Manipur.
The opposition also intends to raise concerns about aviation safety following the Air India 171 crash in Ahmedabad and the restoration of full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. With 21 sittings scheduled until August 21, the session is expected to be a battleground for these high-stakes issues.
