Trump Diagnosed with Common Vein Condition, White House Confirms

Washington, July 18, 2025 – The White House announced on Thursday that U.S. President Donald Trump has been diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency, a prevalent condition causing swelling in his lower legs. The statement followed a medical evaluation prompted by recent observations of the 79-year-old president’s swollen ankles.
According to White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, who read a letter from Trump’s physician during a press briefing, an ultrasound confirmed the condition, which is common among individuals over 70. The examination ruled out more severe issues such as deep vein thrombosis or arterial disease.

Additional tests showed no signs of heart failure, kidney issues, or systemic illness, Leavitt noted, emphasizing that Trump is experiencing no discomfort from the condition.
The National Library of Health’s MedlinePlus website describes venous insufficiency as a condition where veins struggle to return blood from the legs to the heart, often leading to swelling. The White House’s disclosure aimed to address public speculation about Trump’s health following recent photographs highlighting the swelling.
