Mumbai/New Delhi: An IndiGo flight traveling from Delhi to Goa was forced to make an unscheduled landing in Mumbai on Wednesday evening after experiencing a mid-air engine malfunction. The Airbus A320neo, operating as flight 6E-6271, departed Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport around 8:00 PM but encountered a technical issue that prompted the pilot to divert the aircraft to Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport.
According to sources cited by PTI, the pilot issued a “PAN PAN PAN” call, signaling an urgent but non-life-threatening emergency, due to a failure in one of the aircraft’s engines. The plane was approximately 100 nautical miles north of Bhubaneswar when the issue was detected at 9:27 PM. The aircraft landed safely in Mumbai at 9:53 PM, with 191 passengers and crew members on board, all of whom disembarked without incident.
IndiGo released a statement acknowledging the event, attributing the diversion to a “technical snag” detected during the flight to Manohar International Airport in Goa. The airline emphasized that standard procedures were followed, and the plane was safely redirected to Mumbai. The aircraft is currently undergoing maintenance and inspections, while IndiGo arranged an alternative flight to transport passengers to their intended destination.

This incident follows another recent event involving IndiGo, where a Delhi-to-Patna flight performed a go-around maneuver at Patna’s airport on Tuesday due to an unstable landing approach, though it landed safely on its second attempt. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is expected to investigate the Mumbai incident to determine the cause of the engine failure. Further details are awaited as the inquiry progresses.
