MMRCL Proposes New Underground Metro Line to Transform South Mumbai Connectivity

The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) has submitted a proposal to the Maharashtra government for a new 17.5-kilometer underground metro corridor, known as Line 11 (Green Line), stretching from Anik Depot to the Gateway of India. As reported by Metro Rail News, this project seeks to bolster Mumbai’s public transportation system by connecting key South Mumbai locales, including Wadala, Sewri, Byculla, and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT). The proposal awaits initial clearance from the state government before advancing to the Union government’s Urban Development Department for further review.

A senior MMRCL official, quoted by Metro Rail News, stated that Line 11 will include 13 underground stations. Eight of these will be built using the cut-and-cover method, involving trench excavation and subsequent covering, while the remaining five will employ the New Austrian Tunnelling Method, leveraging surrounding rock for structural support. The line will integrate with the Anik-Pratiksha Nagar BEST bus depot, covering 16 hectares, to enhance connectivity with existing bus infrastructure. MMRCL estimates the corridor will accommodate 580,000 daily commuters by 2031, with projections rising to 869,000 by 2041.

This proposal comes as Mumbai Metro’s Aqua Line 3, a 33.5-kilometer underground corridor, nears operational status. Line 11 is designed to further reduce traffic congestion in Mumbai, offering a sustainable and efficient transport solution for the city’s commuters.
