Pakistan to Decide on Hockey Team’s India Trip for Asia Cup, Junior World Cup Pending Security Review

Pakistan is cautiously evaluating the security environment in India before deciding whether to send its national hockey team to compete in the upcoming Asia Cup and Junior World Cup later this year. A senior government official has emphasized that the team’s participation hinges on the absence of any security risks. Rana Mashood, chairman of the Prime Minister’s Youth Development and Sports Program, stated that Pakistan will only travel to India if the government is fully confident in the safety measures provided.

The Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) has formally requested guidance and approval from relevant ministries to dispatch teams for the two major tournaments hosted in India. The Asia Cup, set for August 27 to September 7, 2025, in Rajgir, Bihar, also serves as a qualifier for the 2026 World Cup, while the Junior World Cup is scheduled for November 28 to December 10, 2025, in Chennai and Madurai. Mashood, a former minister, highlighted concerns stemming from India’s Operation Sindoor, noting that the current situation poses risks for Pakistani nationals traveling to India. “The government will thoroughly assess the security conditions for Pakistani citizens, and we will not jeopardize our players’ safety if we are not satisfied,” he told PTI.

PHF Secretary-General Rana Mujahid acknowledged that Pakistan has previously participated in international events in India, but the current strained bilateral relations necessitate government clearance. He also noted that the PHF is actively monitoring social media threats directed at the hockey team, adding to the complexity of the decision.
