Heavy Rain Alert: 70 Districts Drenched, Sardar Sarovar Hits 50% More Downpours Forecast for Gujarat

Ahmedabad: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds and thunderstorms across Gujarat. Rain intensity is expected to increase starting today.
According to the IMD, a cyclonic circulation and trough are likely to cause significant downpours. Heavy rain is probable in the state until July 15th. Several districts could experience moderate to heavy showers, with the heaviest downpours predicted specifically for July 12th and 13th. Due to dangerous sea currents, fishermen have been advised by authorities to avoid venturing into the sea for the next five days.
Sardar Sarovar Dam at 49.27% Capacity
Data from the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) indicates the Sardar Sarovar Dam is currently holding 49.27% of its total storage capacity. Across the state, 206 reservoirs are filled to 56.43% of their combined capacity. Notably, 24 dams are completely full (100%), while 38 dams are on high alert.
Seasonal rainfall data shows regional variations: Kutch has received 57.22% of its average, North Gujarat 41.93%, East Central Gujarat 45.65%, Saurashtra 46.60%, and South Gujarat 52.09%. Overall, Gujarat has received 47.54% of its average seasonal rainfall so far.
70 Districts Receive Rain in 14 Hours
Rainfall was recorded in 70 Districts across Gujarat during a 14-hour period from 6 am to 8 pm. Gariyadhar in Bhavnagar district received the highest rainfall at 2.13 inches (54 mm), followed by Shihor with 1.22 inches (31 mm), Sankheda with 0.71 inches (18 mm), Bhavnagar city with 0.67 inches (17 mm), and Botad with 0.47 inches (12 mm). Galateshwar, Lakhnip, and Vallabhipur each recorded 0.39 inches (10 mm). Only two Districts received over 1 inch of rain, while 61 Districts recorded less than 1 inch.
