Delhi CM Rekha Gupta’s ₹60 Lakh Residence Renovation Scrapped Amid Controversy

The Delhi government has called off a ₹60 lakh renovation project for Chief Minister Rekha Gupta’s official residence, according to officials cited by news agency PTI.

The Public Works Department (PWD) notified the Delhi government on July 9 that the renovation tender was canceled due to “administrative reasons.” The project included electrical upgrades, such as installing 14 air conditioners, televisions worth ₹9 lakh, and lighting fixtures costing ₹6 lakh.

Gupta, a first-term MLA, was assigned two bungalows on Raj Niwas Marg by the PWD one for her residence and another for a camp office, which she inaugurated last week. She assumed the role of Chief Minister in June, following the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) victory in the February Delhi assembly elections.

Notably, Gupta opted not to reside in the bungalow previously occupied by former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) at 6, Flag Staff Road in Civil Lines. The BJP had heavily criticized Kejriwal during the election campaign, alleging excessive spending on the bungalow’s renovation and branding it a “sheeshmahal.” These accusations, coupled with claims of irregularities in the Delhi liquor policy, were key factors in the BJP’s electoral triumph over AAP.
