Over 100 MSU Girls Hostel Students Hospitalized In Vadodara After Food Poisoning

Vadodara: A major case of food poisoning at the Maharaja Sayajirao University (MSU) Girls Hostel in Vadodara has led to more than 100 students being hospitalized. The incident happened late Tuesday night after hundreds of students reportedly experienced severe abdominal pain and vomiting following dinner served in the hostel mess.
According to reports, around 350 students began complaining of discomfort after eating dishes such as paneer bhurji, khichdi, kheer, roti, and dal-rice. The situation escalated quickly, and more than 95 students were rushed to Sayaji Hospital, with many brought in via ambulances as their conditions deteriorated.
One student from Kerala, staying at the Hansa Mehta Girls Hostel, shared her ordeal: “I had dinner at the hostel which included paneer bhurji, kheer, roti, and rice. Around 1 a.m., I began feeling very sick with intense stomach pain.” Students reported classic symptoms of food poisoning, vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, and sharp stomach cramps. Many also voiced complaints about the poor quality and hygiene of food served at the hostel mess.
Food Safety Officer V.H. Nisarika stated that multiple health department teams had reached the site. “We observed a lack of hygiene in the mess and will be issuing a notice. Three food inspectors are currently collecting samples, and an FSL team is also conducting an investigation on-site,” she said.
MSU’s acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dhanesh Patel, confirmed the incident. “The students had dinner at the S.D. Hall mess last night. Girls from four hostels ate there. Around 70 to 80 students were admitted to Sayaji Hospital. Thankfully, most are stable now, and about 15 to 20 students have already been discharged.” He added that the university would inspect the mess facility and take necessary action based on the findings.
