Gopal Khemka Murder: One Of The Key Accused Killed In Police Encounter In Patna

Patna: One of the key accused linked to the murder of Patna-based businessman Gopal Khemka was shot dead in a police encounter on Tuesday morning. Identified as Vikas, also known as Raja, he allegedly opened fire at police personnel during a raid in the Mal Salami area of Patna, prompting retaliatory gunfire in which he was killed.

Authorities stated that Raja had played a key role in the murder plot, allegedly supplying the firearm used to kill Khemka. He was also reportedly in contact with Umesh, the primary accused in the case. The police team, acting on intelligence inputs, had reached the area to arrest Raja when he reportedly began shooting at them. In the ensuing exchange, he was fatally injured. A pistol, several live rounds, and empty cartridges were recovered from the site. His body has been sent for autopsy.

This development follows the arrest of the prime suspect, Umesh, a resident of Patna City, who is believed to have pulled the trigger in the killing of Khemka on the night of July 4. Two more individuals were taken into custody on Monday, and are currently being questioned for their involvement in the case.

Khemka, the owner of Magadh Hospital and an active member of various social organizations, was gunned down outside his home in the Gandhi Maidan area at around 11:40 pm, shortly after exiting his vehicle. CCTV footage captured the chilling moment, revealing that the assailant had been lying in wait near Khemka’s residence, indicating that the attack was premeditated.

Police believe the murder was orchestrated by a larger group, with multiple collaborators including informants who tracked Khemka’s movements on the day of the incident. Over a dozen individuals have been detained for questioning since the investigation intensified. One of the detained, Roshan Kumar from Punpun, raised suspicion after being spotted at Khemka’s funeral on July 6. His presence there has added a new layer to the ongoing probe.

While an official confirmation regarding Umesh’s arrest is still awaited, multiple sources suggest he was apprehended in Patna on Monday. Meanwhile, BJP leader Neeraj Kumar has claimed that the killing may have political links, alleging that the shooter was hired by an individual with political influence. The murder of Gopal Khemka has sparked widespread outrage and concern across Bihar, with pressure mounting on law enforcement to uncover the full extent of the conspiracy.
