Delhi Greets Monday with Rain as IMD Extends Yellow Alert

New Delhi residents woke up to rainfall on Monday morning, finding relief from the persistent heat and humidity that had gripped the city. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has extended its yellow alert for the capital, forecasting continued showers through the weekend. According to the IMD, the city can expect generally cloudy skies with light to moderate rain, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning.
The IMD’s latest bulletin indicates that Delhi’s maximum temperature on Sunday reached 33.3°C, slightly below the seasonal average, while the minimum was 27°C, aligning with typical July conditions. The weather agency predicts temperatures will range between 32°C and 34°C for the maximum and 26°C to 28°C for the minimum in the coming days. Light rain is also expected from July 7 to July 9.
Weather expert noted that rainfall activity has begun across the National Capital Region in a scattered pattern. He anticipates an increase in intensity from Saturday, peaking between July 6 and 8, as the monsoon axis remains close to Delhi. The IMD defines light rainfall as up to 15.5 mm, moderate rainfall as 15.6 mm to 64.4 mm, heavy rainfall as 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm, and very heavy rainfall as 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm. The combination of pre-monsoon showers and the advancing monsoon system has prompted the IMD to advise residents to carry umbrellas or raincoats. While the rain is expected to keep temperatures pleasant, occasional heavy downpours may lead to waterlogging in low-lying areas and disrupt travel. An IMD official confirmed that the yellow alert, signaling a need to stay aware, will remain in effect through the weekend.
