Earthquake of Magnitude 3.5 Nepal, No Damage Reported

A 3.5-magnitude earthquake struck Nepal on Sunday morning, according to the National Centre of Seismology (NCS). The tremor, which occurred at 8:21 AM IST, was centered at a depth of 10 kilometers with coordinates at 27.70 N latitude and 87.76 E longitude. The NCS shared details on X, stating, “EQ of M: 3.5, On: 06/07/2025 08:21:30 IST, Lat: 27.70 N, Long: 87.76 E, Depth: 10 Km, Location: Nepal.” Authorities reported no casualties or significant damage.
This quake follows a 4.2-magnitude earthquake that hit Nepal on June 29, also at a depth of 10 kilometers, as noted by the NCS. The earlier event similarly caused no reported harm but underscored the region’s ongoing seismic activity.
Nepal’s vulnerability to earthquakes stems from its position on the boundary between the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. The Indian plate’s subduction beneath the Eurasian plate generates significant tectonic stress, fueling frequent quakes and the formation of the Himalayan mountain range. The country still remembers the devastating 7.8-magnitude earthquake of April 25, 2015, which claimed 8,969 lives, commemorated with a minute of silence on April 26 this year.
In a separate event, a 5.3-magnitude quake struck Japan’s Tokara island chain on Saturday, July 5, at a depth of 20 kilometers, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency. Local media reported no tsunami warnings or significant impacts.
