Shubman Gill Misses Triple Century, But Breaks Three Major Records

Edgbaston: On Day 2 of the second Test against England, India’s new Test captain Shubman Gill fell short of a historic triple century by just 31 runs. Had he reached 300, Gill would have joined the elite club of Indian triple-centurions alongside Virender Sehwag (twice) and Karun Nair. Nevertheless, his masterful knock of 269 runs off 387 balls, featuring 30 fours and 3 sixes, etched his name into Indian cricket history through three significant records.
India posted a massive first innings total of 587, and England ended the day at 77/3.
The Three Major Records Set by Shubman Gill:
- Highest Test Score by an Indian Captain:
Gill’s 269 surpassed Virat Kohli’s 254 (vs South Africa, Pune, 2019), becoming the highest individual score by an Indian Test captain.
- Highest Test Score by an Indian Outside Asia:
He broke the long-standing record of Sachin Tendulkar’s 241* (Sydney, 2004), now holding the highest Test score by an Indian outside Asia.
- Third-Highest Score by a Visiting Batter at Edgbaston:
Edgbaston has historically favored English bowlers, and only two visiting batters had scored double hundreds here before:
Zaheer Abbas (Pakistan) – 274 in 1971
Graeme Smith (South Africa) – 277 in 2003
Now, Shubman Gill joins this elite group with 269 runs, becoming the third-highest visiting scorer at the venue.
Additional Milestones:
