Liverpool Star Player Diogo Jota Passes Away at 28 in Road Accident

Liverpool forward Diogo Jota, aged 28, tragically lost his life in a car accident on Thursday, alongside his brother André Silva, the Portugal national team announced via a statement on X.
The Portuguese Football Federation expressed profound grief, stating, “The Portuguese Football Federation and the entire football community are heartbroken over the loss of Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva in a tragic accident in Spain this morning.” The federation also requested UEFA to hold a minute’s silence before Portugal’s Women’s European Championship match against Spain on Thursday.
Spanish authorities reported that the accident occurred in Zamora, northwestern Spain, shortly after Jota’s recent wedding. The crash claimed the lives of both Jota and his 26-year-old brother, André Silva. Jota leaves behind his wife and three children.
Zamora’s Provincial Council confirmed the incident, noting, “Two young men, aged 28 and 26, perished in a collision on the A-52 near Palacios de Sanabria. The vehicle ignited, with flames spreading to nearby vegetation. The Rionegro del Puente Fire Station responded to the scene. Rest in peace.”
Jota, a Porto native, began his career at Paços de Ferreira’s youth academy before joining Atlético Madrid in 2016. He later had a loan spell at Porto and moved to Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League. FC Porto mourned the loss, stating on X, “FC Porto is devastated. We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Diogo Jota and André Silva, who was also part of our youth ranks. Rest in peace.”
Liverpool FC issued a statement on its website, saying, “The club will refrain from further comments at this time and asks that the privacy of Diogo and André’s family, friends, teammates, and staff be respected during this devastating time.”

Jota’s most successful years came at Liverpool, where he won the FA Cup, League Cup, and the Premier League in the 2024/25 season under managers Jürgen Klopp and Arne Slot. A key member of Portugal’s national team, he contributed to their UEFA Nations League victories in 2019 and 2025.André Silva, also a professional footballer, played for Penafiel in Portugal’s second division.
