Prada Finally Acknowledges That It drew Inspiration From India’s Kolhapuri Chappals Following Backlash

After facing growing criticism and backlash in India, Prada has finally acknowledged that its upcoming Spring/Summer 2026 menswear collection features footwear inspired by Kolhapuri chappals, a traditional handcrafted leather sandal from Maharashtra and Karnataka.

The controversy erupted after Prada’s recent men’s fashion show in Milan showcased open-toe leather sandals that bore a strong resemblance to the iconic Kolhapuri design. At the time of the show, the brand made no mention of the Indian origin of the design, prompting sharp reactions across social media and from Indian officials, particularly representatives of the artisan communities who have been preserving this heritage craft for generations.

Responding to the criticism, Lorenzo Bertelli, Prada Group Head of Corporate Social Responsibility, stated:
“Prada acknowledges that sandals inspired by traditional Indian footwear made in specific districts in Maharashtra and Karnataka, India, were featured in its Men’s 2026 Spring Summer show in Milan. We are committed to responsible design practices, fostering cultural engagement, and opening a dialogue for a meaningful exchange with local Indian artisan communities as we have done in the past in other collections to ensure the rightful recognition of their craft.”

The acknowledgment comes amid calls from cultural experts and artisans for proper credit and engagement when drawing from traditional crafts. The resemblance between Prada’s design and the Kolhapuri chappals did not go unnoticed, with many pointing out that such reinterpretations without attribution amount to cultural appropriation.

Bertelli also clarified that the designs are not final and are still under development. “Please note that, for now, the entire collection is currently at an early stage of design development and none of the pieces are confirmed to be produced or commercialized,” he said.

He reiterated the brand’s intention to engage responsibly with the communities involved. “We are committed to responsible design practices, fostering cultural engagement, and opening a dialogue for a meaningful exchange with local Indian artisan communities.” He added, “We would welcome the opportunity for further discussion and will set a follow-up with the relevant Prada teams.”

As luxury brands increasingly turn to traditional crafts for inspiration, the episode underscores the importance of respectful cultural collaboration and acknowledgment.
