Man Sets Fire Inside Packed Moving Subway In Seoul, Reportedly Out Of Anger Over His Divorce: Video Goes Viral

Chaos erupted aboard a moving subway train in Seoul after a 67-year-old man allegedly set fire to a packed carriage using gasoline. The recently released CCTV footage, now widely circulating online, shows passengers scrambling to escape the blaze as panic spread through the train.
The incident occurred on May 31 on Seoul Subway Line 5, which was carrying approximately 160 passengers at the time. The alleged arsonist, identified only by his surname Won, reportedly poured a flammable liquid on the floor of the train before igniting it. The act is believed to have been motivated by anger over his divorce settlement.
According to authorities, six passengers sustained burn injuries, while 23 others, including Won himself, were treated for smoke inhalation. The fire caused an estimated 330 million won (approximately £197,000) in damages to the train carriage.
Police apprehended Won shortly after the incident. He is now facing charges of attempted murder and arson. Investigators revealed that he had purchased the gasoline used in the attack two weeks prior, suggesting premeditation.
The CCTV footage was released by the Seoul Southern District Prosecutors’ Office, sparking widespread outrage and concern online. Netizens have expressed horror over the attack and are calling for stricter safety measures in public transportation.
Authorities have confirmed that the investigation is ongoing and have pledged to review existing security protocols to prevent similar incidents in the future.
