Fatima Sana Shaikh: Bollywood’s MeToo Movement Sparks Change

In a recent interview, Bollywood actress Fatima Sana Shaikh discussed the evolving landscape of the film industry concerning sexual misconduct and the impact of the MeToo movement. Known for her roles in films like Dangal and Sam Bahadur, Shaikh highlighted how the industry has become more accountable since the movement gained traction.

Shaikh emphasized that the MeToo movement has empowered women to speak out about their experiences, fostering a culture where complaints are taken more seriously. She noted that the male-dominated nature of Bollywood has historically complicated professional and personal boundaries, but recent changes have introduced greater accountability. “Now, people are more cautious because they know they’ll be held responsible,” she told.

The actress also praised OTT platforms such as Netflix and Amazon Prime Video for implementing strict workplace guidelines. She explained that these platforms mandate Prevention of Sexual Harassment (PoSH) training sessions, where cast and crew are informed about their rights and appropriate conduct. “You’re briefed on what’s acceptable and what isn’t,” Shaikh said, underscoring the structured approach to ensuring safer sets.

While acknowledging that misconduct is not unique to Bollywood and can occur in any industry, Shaikh clarified that the film industry as a whole is not inherently flawed. She described instances of misconduct as isolated, often involving minor players rather than systemic issues. Reflecting on her own experiences, Shaikh shared that she has faced uncomfortable situations but never direct sexual misconduct within Bollywood.

Shaikh’s candid remarks come as she promotes her upcoming projects, including Metro… In Dino, set for theatrical release on July 4, and Aap Jaisa Koi, a Netflix film co-starring R. Madhavan, slated to stream from July 11. Her openness about industry challenges underscores the ongoing efforts to create a safer and more equitable environment in Bollywood.
