India Sets New Record in England
India’s 3/359 is now the highest score by India on Day 1 of a Test match in England, surpassing the previous record of 7/338 set in 2022.
Yashasvi’s Unique World Record
Yashasvi Jaiswal (101 runs off 159 balls, 1 six, 16 fours) became the first player in the world to score a century in his debut Test in three different major cricketing nations.
He previously scored: 171 vs West Indies (Debut in 2021), 161 vs Australia (Debut in Australia, 2024). And now 101 vs England (Debut in England, 2025)
Captain Gill’s Remarkable Ton
Shubman Gill (127* off 175 balls, 1 six, 16 fours) also scored a century, making him the fifth Indian captain to score a hundred in his first Test as skipper. He joins the elite company of: Vijay Hazare, Sunil Gavaskar, Dilip Vengsarkar and Virat Kohli.
This was also Gill’s sixth Test century, and importantly, his first Test century outside Asia. His previous best outside Asia was 91 runs in Australia (2021).
Unbroken 138-Run Stand Between Gill & Pant
Gill and Jaiswal added 129 runs for the third wicket. By stumps, Gill and Vice-Captain Rishabh Pant (65* off 102 balls, 2 sixes, 6 fours) had put together an unbeaten 138-run partnership. Earlier, openers Yashasvi and KL Rahul (42 off 78 balls, 8 fours) built a solid foundation with a 91-run opening stand. However, just before lunch, England struck back by dismissing both Rahul and debutant Sai Sudharsan (0).
