Investigation Launched into Deadly Pune Bridge Collapse

PUNE: A devastating collapse of an aging iron bridge spanning the Indrayani River in Pune’s Maval tehsil has left four people dead and numerous others injured, prompting an urgent investigation into the cause of the tragedy. The incident, which occurred around 3:30 PM on Sunday in the Kundamala area a popular picnic destination has raised questions about structural integrity, overcrowding, and possible neglect.
According to preliminary reports, the bridge, weakened by rust and age, buckled under the weight of a large crowd gathered on it, despite being designated for pedestrian use only. Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, speaking to reporters, noted, “Initial findings indicate the bridge was old and rusted. A large number of people were on it when it gave way.” The swollen river, fueled by days of heavy rainfall, likely exacerbated the situation, sweeping several victims into its strong currents.
Rescue operations are ongoing, with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and local police working tirelessly to locate missing individuals. Authorities have confirmed that at least 32 people were injured, with six in critical condition. The Pimpri-Chinchwad Police and other agencies are investigating the circumstances, focusing on the bridge’s condition and the absence of adequate safety measures.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed condolences, stating, “I am deeply saddened by this tragedy in Indori, near Talegaon. We are in constant contact with local officials to ensure swift rescue efforts.” He added that six individuals have been rescued so far, and the state has allocated Rs 5 lakh in compensation for the families of the deceased, with medical expenses covered for the injured.
Local residents and eyewitnesses reported that the bridge, a decades-old structure, had been flagged as unsafe prior to the collapse. The state government had recently approved Rs 8 crore for a new bridge, with construction set to begin post-monsoon. However, questions remain about why the aging structure was not better maintained or restricted to prevent such a disaster.
The collapse has cast a shadow over Kundamala, a scenic spot known for its monsoon allure. As rescue teams continue their search downstream and investigations deepen, authorities are urging the public to refrain from speculation until official findings are released.
