Renowned Industrialist Sunjay Kapur Dies at 53
New Delhi, June 13, 2025 – Sunjay Kapur, a prominent Indian businessman and former spouse of Bollywood actress Karisma Kapoor, passed away at age 53 in the United Kingdom. According to reports, Kapur suffered a fatal heart attack during a polo match on June 12. The news was confirmed by author and columnist Suhel Seth, who shared a condolence message on X, stating, “Deeply saddened at the passing of @sunjaykapur: he passed away earlier today in England: a terrible loss and deepest condolences to his family and to his colleagues @sonacomstar. Kapur, the chairman of Sona Comstar, a leading automotive technology company, was actively engaged in a polo game when he collapsed. Sources cited by India Today suggest that he may have accidentally swallowed a bee while riding, which could have contributed to the cardiac event. Despite immediate medical attention, he could not be revived.
Sunjay Kapur was the son of industrialist Dr. Surinder Kapur and led Sona Comstar to prominence in the automotive sector. He also served as president of the Automotive Component Manufacturers Association (ACMA) of India. His contributions to the industry and his passion for polo made him a well-known figure in both corporate and social circles.
Kapur married Karisma Kapoor in 2003 at her family’s Krishna Raj bungalow in Mumbai. The couple, who had two children, Samaira and Kiaan, divorced in 2016 after a widely publicized separation. Kapur later married Priya Sachdev, a former model and entrepreneur, and they welcomed a son, Azarias, in 2018. He was frequently seen spending time with his children from his marriage to Karisma in Mumbai.
Following the news of his passing, Kareena Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan were spotted arriving at Karisma Kapoor’s residence in Mumbai to offer their support. A paparazzi video capturing their arrival surfaced on Instagram.
