Mumbai News: 25-Year-Old Killed After Large Tree Falls On Three In Vikhroli; Two Escape

Mumbai: A devastating accident in Vikhroli claimed the life of 25-year-old Tejas Naidu when a massive tree collapsed during the city’s first monsoon rains. The young man was fatally struck while observing the storm with companions at Ganesh Maidan.

The tragedy occurred as Mumbai experienced severe weather conditions on Monday morning, with strong winds and torrential rainfall weakening the tree’s root system. Naidu was standing on the street watching the downpour when the unstable tree crashed down, striking him directly on the head.

Emergency responders and bystanders immediately rushed Naidu to Godrej Hospital, but medical staff declared him deceased upon arrival. The fallen tree had been structurally compromised and posed an imminent threat, a hazard amplified by the harsh weather conditions.

Additional Weather-Related Damages

Monday’s heavy rainfall triggered widespread infrastructure damage across Mumbai, including building collapses, fallen trees, and a minor landslide incident. At 9:51 am, the deteriorating Haji Kasam chawl on Pitambar Lane in Mahim experienced a partial collapse, with the second-floor staircase and wall giving way. Fire department personnel successfully rescued two elderly residents from the scene.

Around 2 pm, another incident occurred when a MHADA-owned building on Ridge Road was affected by a landslide, though all occupants were safely evacuated. Three residents were relocated to emergency shelters while nearby shop owners remained uninjured.

Local residents attributed the landslide to weak structural foundations and unauthorized construction practices. Community members also expressed concerns that high-rise development and deforestation in the Malabar Hill area have contributed to geological instability.

Municipal authorities recorded nine separate incidents of residential and wall collapses throughout the island city, though no additional casualties were reported. A 24-year-old man required hospitalization after being injured by falling tree debris, and multiple electrical short circuits were documented across the affected areas.
