The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a series of weather alerts for several Indian states, predicting heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds through May 29, 2025, driven by a cyclonic circulation over the Arabian Sea. Mumbai is under an orange alert for May 24, with forecasts of heavy rain, thunderstorms, and winds up to 60 kmph, particularly in the evening, under cloudy skies. The IMD also issued a red alert for Konkan and Goa, warning of extremely heavy rainfall, with some areas potentially seeing over 204.4 mm of rain in 24 hours. Coastal Karnataka, Kerala, and parts of Andhra Pradesh are also expected to experience significant rainfall, with fishing bans imposed along the Kerala-Karnataka-Lakshadweep coasts from May 24 to 27 due to high waves up to 3.5 meters, as reported by the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS).
In southern India, Kerala is bracing for heavy rainfall over the next seven days, with the southwest monsoon expected to arrive early, around May 27, compared to the usual June 1 onset. Andhra Pradesh faces five days of thunderstorms with lightning and winds up to 60 kmph from May 23 to 27, affecting south coastal, north coastal, and Rayalaseema regions. Coastal Karnataka and Assam are also under alerts for heavy to very heavy rainfall.
In the north, Delhi is expected to see pre-monsoon showers with thunderstorms and light to moderate rainfall on May 24, with temperatures around 37°C maximum and 23°C minimum. The IMD reported recent heavy rainfall in Gangetic West Bengal, with Haldia recording 10 cm and Diamond Harbour 9 cm, while Mumbai’s Santacruz and Ratnagiri stations each recorded 3 cm. The IMD’s forecasts highlight the influence of a low-pressure area off the south Konkan-Goa coast, which may intensify, bringing continued heavy rainfall to India’s west coast and parts of the northeast.
